I'll tell you something you probably don’t know.
The solution to most of your problems, your sadness, your spiritual dryness, and your restlessness might just be in music.
Here’s a quick analogy:
When Saul was distressed, they didn’t send him a prophet. They called for a psalmist. A string player. And the evil spirit literally vanished. Disappeared. Couldn’t stay.
If a prophet had come to speak, Saul might not have listened. But music doesn’t need permission to begin its work. For words, you have to intentionally listen, open up, let the meaning sink in. But not music. It goes deeper. It slips past your walls and speaks to your soul.
That’s why listening excessively to music that doesn’t carry God’s presence can damage your spirit-man. But that’s a topic for another day.
See, music is prayer.
Music is communication with God. From your spirit to His. In ways words could never capture. Music opens portals. It lifts you into new dimensions without effort. And again, I know I said it’s a conversation for another time, but this is why music that isn’t God-inspired doesn’t help. To be fair, it doesn't help at all.
Most of the newsletters I’ve written came to me while praying, meditating, or listening to worship. This one came through music.
Music is very powerful.
Let me tell you how powerful music is.
If you do everything right in your Christian walk but you don’t feed your spirit with Christian music, and instead you listen to everything else, you won’t grow. You might have a lot of head knowledge, but you’ll barely feel the presence and power of God in your life.
On the other hand, if you find it hard to pray for long, to listen to sermons, or to meditate and read your Bible, but you constantly listen to Christian music, it will still leave such a strong impression on your heart. So much that you’ll know it’s not enough. You’ll begin to desire more. Music will draw you closer to God. And that’s why you must be careful what you listen to, because music can also draw you further away.
That’s why the other day, when someone asked if I listen to secular music, I just smiled. Because once you say you mostly listen to Christian music, the next thing you hear is, How? Christian music is not interesting. There are no vibes. Everything is just worship.
To that, I’ll say two things:
One, there are so many variations of Christian music now that you can keep it godly no matter the genre. There’s so much out there.
Secondly, as a Christian, you’re not exactly meant to seek things that gratify your flesh or make you feel hyped. You’re actually supposed to be dying to the flesh daily. So forgive me if I say you don’t necessarily need vibes. What you need is God’s presence.
This Christianity thing is not a joke. I’ve said it before. It’s not a cloak you wear because you go to church on Sundays or because you bear a Christian name. It’s a life you’re meant to live every day, every hour, every minute, every second. You’re living to please someone, and that person is not you. Not your flesh.
Do you know why they started calling people Christians? Because they were seen to act like Christ. Their conduct reminded people of Jesus. Which means, if you ever get the privilege to be called a Christian (and yes, it is a great privilege and honor), you should live up to it.
So, you and I, and Apostle Paul, and John the Beloved, and your pastor that you think is way holier than you are meant to live the same kind of life. You’re the one placing them on a higher level. But from God’s side, we’re all expected to follow the same standard of holiness.
And the thing is, God can really help you if you’re willing.
And yes, I’ll be honest with you. It’s a journey. A process. I don’t expect that just because you’ve read this newsletter, you’ll go and delete all your non-Godly music playlists. (I lowkey hope that, though), but what I do want is for you to make a conscious decision to start adding Godly music into your daily life. Include more of God, and before you know it, you’ll begin to crave less of the other stuff.
It’s like this. If you leave a half-filled cup of coffee in the sink and turn on the tap for a second, just one drop of water will fall in. It won’t change anything. It will still taste like coffee, and you could still drink it.
If it runs for three seconds, it’ll still probably taste the same. But let that water run for ten seconds—you may not want to drink it anymore.
Now, leave it for five minutes and come back.
You’ll find there’s not a single trace of coffee left. It’s pure water now.
That’s how it works with these things. If you want to add Godly music drop by drop, do it. But by all means, make sure you’re adding something. Make sure you’re pouring something fresh into that cup. Your life will become purer, and you’ll love it more. I promise you.
Now, while I’m saying all this, I’m not insisting that you can’t listen to certain other songs. Notice I said non-Godly music, not necessarily secular music. You’ll know what’s non-Godly when you hear it.
Birthday songs, clean love songs, songs that tell beautiful, wholesome stories—you might still leave room for those. But here’s the interesting part: the more you listen to gospel songs, the more addicted you get. Other songs will start to feel like a demotion. Honestly, it becomes a case of I could, but why would I?
It’s like when you know something is lawful, but you also know it’s not expedient. So you just pass.
And no, you don’t have to play prayer chants at your wedding or your birthday party 😂. You can, if you want. Nobody will stop you. But the point is, you can still listen to music that doesn’t go against God, even on your special occasions. Just make sure it fits, and it honors God in the way that matters most.
All that being said, wherever you are on this journey, just start.
You might think, “I’m too far gone. I don’t think I’ll enjoy it.”
Just start, darling.
And if you fall, there’s grace to rise again. That’s how it works. Be gentle with yourself, but be disciplined too.
There are heights and depths in God you’ll never reach if you don’t saturate yourself in gospel music.
I’m not talking about financial blessings or things that can be acquired by just hard work. I’m talking about actual depth—the presence of God, spiritual strength to fight certain battles, revelations, and instructions.
You might never get there… if you don’t soak your spirit in the right sound.
So today, maybe just start with one song. Let it play while you're doing your chores, taking a walk, lying on your bed, or even crying. Let it play when you don't have the words to pray.
Before you know it, drop by drop, your heart starts to shift. You feel lighter. Your cup starts to clear out. And your soul begins to pay attention to its Lover again.
It’s such a simple thing. Just music. But somehow, God uses it to pull you closer.
Until next week,
Titilayo.
Thank youu for sharing Titi💗🔥
This brings back how much progress God has helped me make when He prompted me to make the decision to stop active listening to secular music.
It's a great privilege to have composers of great edifying music.
